Instant Interaction

Want to find a friend and send him an Instant Message? You could use the Ctrl+F command to find your friend first, then send the message, but there's another way. Use Ctrl+I to open an Instant Message box, type in your friend's screen name, then click on the Available button. This will tell you right away if your friend is there and able to get your message.

Mail Management

The Personal Filing Cabinet is where all your e-mail and offline newsgroups are stored. One easy way to file incoming mail in the Filing Cabinet is to read it by opening a separate window. To do this, click on the Incoming Mail folder with the right mouse button, and select New Window. After you have read your new mail, you can file each item by dragging it with the mouse from the New Window to the folder where you want to store it.

Favorite Places

Favorite Places allow you to quickly return to a particular area of the service. Once you've found an area that interests you, just click on the heart icon on the title bar of the window you want to remember. AOL will save this location. You can quickly return there by selecting it from the list under the Favorite Places icon on the Toolbar, which looks like a heart in a folder. You can also select Favorite Places when you're offline. AOL will sign you on and take you straight to the Favorite Place you picked. Favorite Places can be even more useful if you organize them by creating new folders. For example, you could create folders for favorite web sites, favorite AOL area, or by topic (fSports, Computers). Once you've created the folders, just drag Favorite Places into them.

Keys to the Cyber-City

Keywords are a quick way to navigate AOL, but did you know you can also go straight to the Internet using a keyword? Type in a URL and click on GO AOL to launch the Web browser. You'll move directly to that site. This works with gopher and ftp addresses as well as one on the World Wide Web.

Get Online in a Flash

FlashSessions are great for getting information quickly, then signing off and doing the work offline. You can read and respond to e-mail offline, set up file downloads and even work with newsgroups. FlashSession setup is under the Mail menu. AOL has a Walk Me Through option to make setup as easy as possible.
